Masons have always championed public education. Today, we are addressing public education at its most fundamental level: child literacy.
While schools are charged with teaching children to read, the cornerstone of literacy is established inside the home, through family engagement. Unfortunately, not all families have the resources to fulfill their important role in the learning process – and that’s where we come in.
Through our existing Bikes for Books program, the Masons of Oregon have encourage thousands of students to read. Bikes for Books offers students an opportunity to receive a bicycle by reading books.
This new Kindle for Books program provides the same opportunity to Middle School students by giving them the opportunity to receive a Kindle book reader by reading books.

The financial aid to be provided will be 25% by Grand Lodge and 75% provided by local Masonic Lodges.

Waluga Lodge the partnering between local Lodges and middle schools within their area. The Kindle for Books program will help en-courage students to develop a love of reading. It will enable students to educate themselves and become productive citizens of Oregon.
The Bikes For Books program has been a successful program within Oregon as well as in other Masonic Jurisdictions. It has a proven track record and this new Kindle for Books program will allow Freemasonry to extend into a new area of supporting Public Education.
This new program will put Oregon Masonry in good stead with the public school system and assist with acceptance of the existing Masonic Model Student Assistance Program.
Through generous contributions of time and money by Masons statewide, we can start a new cycle of literacy by building a love of learning and reading at the elementary school level. We can make a significant difference in Oregon’s literacy rates, now and long-term. We have the opportunity to make an impact that will last forever – making literacy our legacy.
